"3. Educational status [Chart 15 (a) & (b)]In the survey, it was found that the literacy level of elderly people in rural areas ofDelhi was very miserable as compared to the urban counterparts. About 43% of theelderly people have done only primary schooling and even the worst part was thataround 28% of the rural elderly had not attended school. Whereas in the urbanareas, the percentage of elderly people having graduation degree was very high i.e.around 57% and those pursuing post-graduation degree was fairly well.40 4.Living arrangement [Chart 16 (a) & (b)]Considering the living arrangement in both the areas, around 57.1% of elders inurban area resided with their spouse, 28.57% with their children and 14.3% in oldage homes. In contrast, the elders in rural area majorly stayed with their spouse(71%) and with their children (28.5%). It can be observed that elders in rural areasmay not be aware of old age homes or may not have sufficient finance to afford thesame.41 5.Livelihood [Chart 17 (a) & (b)]The livelihood pattern clearly highlights the fact that the dependency ratio waslower in rural areas as around 57% of the old age people were self-employed and43% were dependent on their children. Whereas in the urban areas total 28%elderly relied on pensions and asset returns which is negligible in rural areas.About half of urban elders relied on their children and only 21% are self- employed. It was seen that remittances appeared as the major source of income forsurvival for the elder whose family has migrated.42 11 6. Ownership of assets [Chart 18 (a) & (b)]In regard to the ownership of assets, the elders in urban owned assets (85%) inmuch greater proportion as compared to the elders in rural areas (35%).
